This article is unfair to museum-goers. It
attempts to define the level of interest of people they
don’t know. There are many reasons why a piece of art or
a collection won’t get as much attention:
- The museumgoer has already seen the painting
earlier in the visit or on a previous visit and would
rather move on to another painting or exhibit.
- The museumgoer is an out-of-towner and, having limited
time, prefers to move on to a piece or exhibit that
interests him/her more.
- Or perhaps the same out-of-towner prefers to
photograph them quickly in order to enjoy them later on.
I have exhibited my artwork in many group and solo
shows, and, while the dynamic is quite different, it is
still very difficult to figure out people’s interest in
one piece or another. Sometimes a piece that appeared to
get little attention ends up selling faster than one
that might have obtained more interest.
Regardless of the reason, one should not be so quick
to judge those people that make time to support the art
that we create.
